Film Research

Genre - Psychological Thriller

Genre conventions – There is emphasis on inner conflict and turmoil within the characters. May feature physical action, however, most suspenseful and tense scenes are carried out with the intensity of the plot. Narrative usually focused around a single character or a small number of characters. Themes usually include death, purpose, identity, perception, and reality. Usually involves scenes that defy common characteristics and tropes that are often found in the movie industry. Since a psychological thriller will most likely be exploring the mind of certain individuals, the production cost for such films are quite significant. Every new psychological thriller is trying to bring something new to the table of an oversaturated market, therefore, the producers will be concerned on finding a voice and identity for the movie itself for it to be distinguished from the others of the same genre

Genre - Science Fiction/ Alternative History

Genre Conventions - Characters in science fiction films are usually regular humans who are finding ways with dealing with the aftermath of some sort of revolutionary technological, environmental and social change. However, the genre itself may not necessarily focus on the individual experiences of the individuals involved in the story, but rather, a message or the conception of the "bigger picture". Although many films in this genre include heavy use of special effects and highly intricate editing, sometimes a story like this can be conveyed with other media such as animation or vary according to/depending on the story. Stories like this tend to focus on the overall ramifications that a new technology would cause in a new world or situation. Can sometimes include conventions that are often seen in psychological thrillers, but are directed towards the specific technological change present in film. - edited 2/24/19
